Gauge and Levels: Environment Canada, Chilliwack above Slesse Creek. High: 2 m, medium: 1.6 m, low: 1.3 m. If this gauge doesn’t work, look at Chilliwack at Vedder Crossing and subtract 1.2 m.
Scenery: Nice run through northern rain forest, not often paddled.
Length of Run: 15 km
Length of Shuttle (one way): 12.5 km
Special Considerations: Wood. There are almost always log jams in the lower section. Continuous with few eddies at higher levels.
General Directions to the Chilliwack River: From Vancouver drive Hwy 1 (Trans Canada Hwy) to Chilliwack. Take Exit 119 and drive Vedder Rd South towards Sardis and Vedder Crossing. You can also take Exit 104 and get via Yarrow to the Vedder Crossing Bridge. This takes about 1hr15min.
Directions: Take out is at a bridge on Chilliwack Lake Road 27 km from Vedder Crossing. Follow Chilliwack Lake Road East for another 10 km to a small settlement. Turn right. The first option for a put-in is to drive straight until you get to the river. For a second possible put-in further upstream turn left and then right. Park at the dead end. You will cross a small creek before you get to the river just below an old bridge foundation.
Description: If you have chosen the upstream put-in the run starts with a little slalom around a couple of ledges (IV-). The river eases somewhat after you pass the lower put-in about 1 km downstream but stays entertaining with continuous and fun boulder gardens. After 10 km a bridge crosses the river. River-wide log jams occur frequently near the island below this bridge.
